Book Reviews

If you are new to IT I suggest anything by O'Reilly or Oracle Press. Their books are always really well written and comprehensive. Even though it can be dead easy just to search the web or use the likes of Pluralsight.com for online courses. However there is something quite satisfying about picking up a physical book and flicking through the pages to learn something new. When I am away from the office I have some downloaded books I use for reference, use what works for you.

OCA/OCP Oracle Database 12c All-in-One Exam Guide (Exams 1Z0-061, 1Z0-062, & 1Z0-063)

I have put the link for Amazon at the bottom of this review but I spotted the hardback edition on Wordery for £20 less than Amazon and for the price it seemed too good an offer to turn down. Despite 18c now being available I think 12c will be around for a while so going to bite the bullet (should have done this years ago) and do my OCA/OCP.  I had the 11g edition of this but someone wanted to check it out and I have never seen it since.

This book is excellent - tbh did not expect anything else.

Pro Oracle GoldenGate for the DBA by Bobby Curtis

Making a note here as planning to grab a copy of this.

Looks good and really need a good reference book for GG from a DBA perspective and this looks like it could be it.

Unix Power Tools by Jerry Peek

This is a book that I have owned for years and years. Pretty wrecked now.

Someone once said to me, Unix an operating system put together by a load of drug fuelled hippies in the 60s and it is still going strong. It is a real pity that there isn't a later edition. Guess Mr Peek has probably retired.

If you are just starting out with Unix and you can pick up a used copy for a
few quid this is the book that will get you up to speed.

The Victorian Internet by Tom Standage

As someone who loves technology, I really liked this.

The reviews on Amazon are probably spot on.

It is a quick read (not necessarily a bad thing) but the author could have added a lot more. I did like the bits on how what we think of as modern things, were around back then. Telegraph operators tapping away to each other leading to online romance, so internet dating is not new.

Stalingrad by Antony Beevor

I have read nearly all of Beevor's books but if I had to pick one,
this would be it.

I enjoyed the Berlin book but Stalingrad is so much more.

Both sides suffered terribly and Beevor manages to gives the story from both sides. If like me, you love history and WWII stuff this is a must to read.

The Holocaust : A New History by Laurence Rees

Picked this up in London last year. It was on the NY Times best seller list
and I can understand why.

The subject matter is very difficult, yet the book manages to tell the story very well. There are a number of references to how countries knew what was going but either failed to help or decided to ignore.

Maybe we still have not learnt from the lessons of the past.

A book we should all read so we don't forget.

A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen

If you like cats and just want a quick read then this is probably for you.

It is a nice enough story but felt like I was reading a book for teenagers.

Homeless guy meets cat. The cat changes his life - the end.

I wanted to really like this but just did not do it.

Three stars ***
